Apple Needs to Keep iPhone Price Cuts in China to Clear Inventory, UBS Says

Apple (AAPL) will need to keep iPhone price cuts in place in China to continue clear inventory amid soft demand, UBS said in a note emailed Monday. With an excess inventory build of 2 million to 3 million iPhone units in China in the December quarter, risk shifts to the March quarter, UBS said. Analysts polled by Capital IQ estimate fiscal Q1 revenue of $118.3 billion and Q2 sales of $96.2 billion. UBS is forecasting Q1 revenue of $117.8 billion and expects the company to book roughly $1 billion more in sales than the projection. UBS has a neutral rating on Apple with a 12-month price target of $190.

AMD Faces Tough Near-Term Setup, But Long-Term AI Prospects, BofA Says

AMD (AMD) might face a potential stock correction around earnings results on Tuesday because of a tougher near-term setup, but long-term artificial intelligence tailwinds remain strong, BofA Securities said Monday in a note. The investment firm said despite a “multi-hundred” billion dollar AI market, AMD faces tough competition from Nvidia, which has over 75% market share, and customer chip partners. AMD is expected to gain share in server CPU market from Intel in Q4, and the trend will continue in 2024, BofA said. The firm expects AMD’s combined revenue from PC and server CPU to make up 20% of the total in 2024. BofA reiterated its buy rating for AMD and raised price objective to $195 from $165.

Starbucks Likely to See Slowing US Momentum, ‘Pressured’ China Trends in Fiscal Q1, UBS Says

Starbucks (SBUX) is expected to see slowing US momentum and “pressured” China sales trends in fiscal Q1, along with potential updates to fiscal year 2024 guidance, UBS said in a note. The coffeehouse chain will report its earnings results on Tuesday. “Concerns about slowing US trends to exit the quarter and more difficult F2Q comparisons have investors mixed on whether FY24 guidance for comps of 5% to 7% and adjusted EPS of 15% to 20% will be reduced or reiterated,” UBS analysts said. They said valuation of the stock is undemanding, and the company remains well positioned long term with an attractive growth profile, but they kept their neutral rating for now, pointing to uncertainty around expected US and China sales pressures.
